Overview

What is it?

The OpenAIRE Portal as a Service (PaaS) is a managed offering that lets ministries, funding agencies and research communities launch their own branded open science discovery portal, without building or hosting any infrastructure themselves.

The portal is a scoped, branded version of OpenAIRE Explore. It runs on the same platform, draws from the same graph, and offers the same capabilities, but filtered to your country, community or funding portfolio, and presented under your identity.

Not a self-service tool. The Portal as a Service is a managed offering. OpenAIRE works with you to scope, configure, brand and launch your portal, and continues to operate it on your behalf.

Target users

Who is it for?

  • National ministries & agencies
A ministry of research or science ministry wanting a national open science portal, showing all domestic research outputs, OA compliance rates and grant portfolios in one place.
  • Funding agencies
A national funder wanting a portal scoped to their grant portfolio, showing all outputs funded by their grants, OA compliance by mandate, and impact mapped to SDGs.
  • Research communities & infrastructures
A thematic research community (climate science, biomedical, humanities) wanting a portal scoped to their field, curated results, community branding, tailored discovery.

Deliverables

What you get

  • Your branding and domain
Your logo, colour palette and URL. The portal looks and feels like yours, visitors don't need to know it's powered by OpenAIRE unless you want them to.
  • Scoped to your community
Results filtered to your country's institutions, your funder's grants, or your community's subject area. Researchers in your portal only see what's relevant to them.
  • OA mandate monitoring
Basic monitoring capabilities built in: open access compliance dashboards scoped to your grants and institutions, with exportable reports. For a dedicated portfolio dashboard with deeper indicators, OpenAIRE Monitor is also available.
  • Always current, zero maintenance for you
The graph updates continuously. Your portal stays fresh without any effort from your team. OpenAIRE handles all infrastructure, updates, security and backups.
  • Full Explore feature set
Advanced search, organisation profiles, project pages, OA route classification, Fields of Science, SDG mapping, claiming and linking outputs to ORCID and grants, embedding widget and reporting, all available in your portal.

Process

How it works

  • Scoping conversation
You tell us who the portal is for, what it should be scoped to (country, funder, community), and what your branding requirements are. We agree on the scope and timeline.
  • Configuration & branding
OpenAIRE configures the graph scope, defining which sources, organisations, funders and subject areas are included. Your logo, colours and domain are applied.
  • Review & testing
You review the portal on a staging environment. Where content is missing or organisations are duplicated, OpenAIRE uses PROVIDE to ingest the missing sources and OpenOrgs to deduplicate and correctly identify organisations, and reaches out to relevant funders to get their grant data ingested too. Search results, OA dashboards and entity profiles are checked against your requirements, and this review and completeness work is repeated in iterations until the portal is ready.
  • Launch
The portal goes live under your domain. OpenAIRE continues to manage infrastructure, data updates and platform improvements, you focus on communicating it to your community.
  • Ongoing support & iteration
OpenAIRE provides ongoing support, monitoring and platform updates. New content keeps arriving through PROVIDE and organisation identities stay current through OpenOrgs, and as the graph grows and Explore adds features, your portal benefits automatically.

Technical

Architecture

The portal sits as a configured layer on top of OpenAIRE Explore, which itself is built on the OpenAIRE Graph. The Graph is never static: PROVIDE continuously ingests content from registered repositories, journals and CRIS systems, while OpenOrgs curates organisation identities and ROR matching, so what your portal shows is always current and correctly linked.

All infrastructure, hosting, backups, security, graph updates, platform upgrades, ingestion and curation, is managed by OpenAIRE. You have zero maintenance responsibility.

Getting started

Start the conversation

If you represent a ministry, funding agency or research community and are interested in a portal, the first step is a short scoping conversation with the OpenAIRE team.

Bring answers to these questions:

  • Who is the portal for?

A national audience, a specific funder's grantee community, or a thematic research community?

  • What should it be scoped to?
Which country, funders, institutions or subject areas should define the scope of results?
  • What's your mandate monitoring requirement?
Do you have an OA mandate that the portal needs to track? What does compliance mean for your community?
